The Opportunity

The Asia New Media Forum, is an event organized by the Southeast Asian Centre for e-Media, to bring together new media practitioners from the Asia region to share their expertise in emerging technologies and methodologies in the field of journalism for the new media. In the Web 2.0 Summit held last year in San Francisco, it was concluded that Web 2.0 has reached its maturity stage, and is now a mainstream phenomenon. However, the potential and its benefits have yet to be fully understood by media organizations in the Asia region. At the same time, the early adopters of technology are talking seriously about new trends such as Web 3.0 and its potential impact in the field of journalism. How will this disrupt the field of journalism has yet to be fully understood.

Given the above context the Asia New Media Forum aims to achieve the following goals:
• To expose new media organizations to the best features of Web 2.0 and how this can be applied in new media organizations
• Showcase best practices of new media organizations in the area of Technology, Business Sustainability and Editorial Planning.
• Prepare new media organizations for opportunities in emerging technologies and methodologies

How can e-media organizations leverage on Geographical Information Systems and Global PS? What are the examples of projects that integrate the best features of Web 2.0? What is the significance of new trends such as Semantic Web, and how can e-Media practitioners leverage on this?

b. Editorial Session: What is the best model for implementing citizen journalism? In the light of the demand for real time information, how will this impact editorial policy? How do we ensure the authenticity of video provided by the citizen journalist? How do we manage the convergence of text news, video news and images? How can editors benefit from social networking? What are the emerging editorial issues for the future?

c. Business Sustainability: How have e-Media business model changed since the past 2 years? What are the best practices in online marketing? Drupal vs. Joomla? Hands down Drupal, I Know I’m a Traitor to this Site
Wednesday, 16 April 2008

by Rachel Chan

Big fan of popular sites like the Onion? Or maybe an avid cult member of MTV? Wonder what these two countercultural sites have in common? Drupal. The common denominator between the two opposing spectrums of youth discourse, is the Content Management System that powers their websites, enabling the dynamic customisable interface of their web presence. For today's column, we shall not go into the superiority of one website's content or ideology over the other; we will only focus our lenses on the design, which is one of the fastest ways of converting the unsuspecting reader to one's ideology.

Skype or Userplane: Catching You When You Fall
Tuesday, 15 April 2008

by Rachel Chan

The good about video conferencing using applications like Skype and Userplane is that it enables you to perform live interviews which does not allow behind the scenes editing of footage. In cases whereby politicians want to wipe off something potentially detrimental to their public image, eg. George Bush Jr's gaffes, this form of journalistic broadcasting can come in handy.

Social Interactions on LiveJournal: Fandom Interactivity
Tuesday, 15 April 2008

by Rachel Chan Suet Kay

It is given that on the internet, interactions between people previously unknown to each other in the physical world are de-personalised due to the inability of ensuring a face to face meeting at every point of interaction. Also due to the proliferation of identity creation through the mass availability of representative symbols, the image and the reality of the social actor may greatly vary from one another.

Coppermine or Gallery? Image Hosting Application For Wordpress
Tuesday, 15 April 2008

by Rachel Chan

Wordpress supports two types of photo galleries. These two are rather popular image hosting applications, namely Coppermine and Gallery. There are not many clear-cut differences between the two, the differences are mainly confined to usability and the preferences of the user. For example, these are customisation options, such as whether the customisation functions all appear in one single page, or whether they are provided on a step by step basis.

Wordpress vs. Blogger: Which is More Effective?
Monday, 14 April 2008

by Rachel Chan

ImageTwo very common blog hosting services are Blogger and Wordpress. In Malaysia especially Blogger, or also known as Blogspot, is a particularly popular service. It is easy to master and use. It has user-friendly options and allows for a newbie to instantly publish. In this way it motivates one who is afraid of technology to blog because it is less intimidating. My first experience with Wordpress, however, somewhat turned my brain to jelly as I found it nearly impossible to master as I was used to using Blogger.
